Travellers who leave the Western Cape craving a genuinely African experience can head straight to KwaZulu-Natal. South Africa’s most African province is the traditional home of the continent’s most famous tribe, the Zulus, whose ethnic culture is welcoming and fascinating.

While the coastal delights of the region are not inconsiderable, the inland regions of KwaZulu-Natal are rich in scenic splendour and historical interest. The magnificent Drakensberg mountain range towers over the rest of KwaZulu-Natal at the highest altitude south of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

The Drakensberg area contains the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, recently declared a World Heritage Site, as well as spectacular natural alpine features like Cathedral Peak, Giant’s Castle and the Amphitheatre.

Between the Orange Free State and Mpumalanga borders lies the area known as ‘Battlefields’. Some of the most important battles in South African history were fought here; Zulu against Boer, Zulu against British and Boer against British. As a result this area is rich in historical memorabilia and artefacts.

One of the most terrible battles of this region was the Battle of Blood River, when the Ncome river is reputed to have run red with the blood of the Zulus. The site of this battle and others are open for inspection, as are many museums, monuments and relics.
